Exercise to Beat Insomnia, Naturally

You don't want to do it vigorously right before you're ready to call it a day...

... but, exercise can be a great natural insomnia treatment.

Why is that? Take a look at some of benefits of exercise:

  • Exercise reduces stress and nervous tension.
  • Exercise reduces muscle tension.
  • Exercise increases the production of endorphins, which when released create a sense of well-being and naturally relieve pain.
  • Exercise causes physical stress on the body and the body's natural defense against physical stress is rest.
  • Exercise and stretching done regularly can contribute significantly to pain reduction.

Since most people who remain wide-eyed at night claim that it's due to excessive stress, it's easy to see why exercise can improve sleep. And, studies have found that not only does regular exercise increase the length of time that we sleep, but it also increases the quality of our sleep.

What time of day is the best for exercise?

If you can, wait until the most stressful part of your day is behind you. Although, if early in the day is the only time you can conveniently fit in some exercise, as is the case with many people, don't worry. Early day exercise can still be useful in helping with your sleep.

One thing to avoid, vigorous exercise within a few hours of bedtime. If that's the only time available for you, some easy stretching exercises, like Yoga or Pilates, which work to relax both your body and mind may be best.

Before you stock up on your next supply of sleeping pills, why not give exercise a try, you may be happily surprised.
